Core Book
We have lots of favourite stories at Nursery. When introducing a new book, we look carefully at the key features. The front cover gives us lots of information about the book including the title, author and the picture is often a clue about what the story might be about.

For two weeks we focus on a 'core book'. By doing this it helps us to understand the story and learn lots about the characters.
After reading the book it enables us to join in with lots of fun activities based around the story. This helps us to learn in all areas of our curriculum.

The three little pigs ...

This is a brilliant classic tale all about how patience and hard work pay off in the end. The first two pigs were a little lazy who refused to put in much effort. As a result they constructed their houses quickly which meant that they could not escape the BIG bad wolf!

We have really enjoyed acting out this story with our friends and designing and building our own houses making sure that they were wolf proof! We also enjoyed writing letters from the wolf to say sorry to the little pigs for being so scary!

Kind by Axel Scheffler

Imagine a world where everyone is kind - how can we make that come true?

This story has inspired us to think of more ways that we can be more kind to others.

We shared our feelings, about what makes us happy and what makes us sad. We also talked about the different ways to be kind to others. We made 'kind' jars' by drawing something that we could do at Nursery that is kind ...

We're going on a Autumn hunt ...
We enjoyed going on an 'Autumn' hunt in the Nursery garden, we found lots of signs that Autumn has finally arrived. Lots of trees have lost their leaves and we also noticed that the leaves are changing colour. We found lots of brown and yellow ones! As we walked through the leaves we heard a crunching sound and when we scooped some of the leaves up into our hands and threw them into the air they danced around in the sky before gently floating back down to the ground just like the 'Five little leaves so bright' song ...

Happy Diwali ...

Today we have been learning all about the Diwali celebration. Diwali is India's biggest and most important holiday of the year. The festival gets its name from the row of clay lamps that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness. This festival is as important to Hindus as the Christmas holiday is to Christians.

We enjoyed watching a clip all about this festival and we found out lots more information by looking at information books. We then made our own Diwali lamps out of clay ...

Bonfire Night ...

We have enjoyed learning lots about this celebration. Did you know that a long, long time ago in 1605, Guy Fawkes and his friends wanted to blow up important buildings in London where the king and his leaders were so that someone else would rule England instead. He was caught before he did this so nobody was hurt, and it's because of him that we celebrate Bonfire Night on 5th November!

We have been busy creating our own fire work displays using chalk and glitter. We also had a go at making fire work sounds using musical instruments, 'BANG, WHOOSH, FIZZ, POP!'

How does Santa go down the chimney by Mac Barnett ...

Over the next two weeks we are sharing this lovely Christmas story about when Santa arrives at a child's house on Christmas Eve, does he go down the chimney feetfirst? or headfirst? What if he gets stuck? What if there is no chimney?  This story has really captured everyone's imaginations!

We have ejoyed sharing our own thoughts of how Santa gets into our homes on Christmas Eve ... "Santa has a magic key!" "Santa makes himself small!" "Santa flies down the chimney!" "Santa can turn himself invisible!"

We have also enjoyed designing our own chimney's and building sleighs for Santa ...

Autumn walk ...
Everyone enjoyed going for a walk on the field behind Nursery. As we walked we looked for signs of Autumn. We noticed that lots of the trees have lost their leaves and the leaves have changed colour from green to red, orange, yellow and brown, and some of the trees had berries on. As we walked through the leaves they made a crunching sound! We also noticed that they grass had lots of mildrew. These are all signs that Autumn is here ...

The paper dolls by Julia Donaldson ...

We have really enjoyed listening to this story, it has inspired us to get creative using our imaginations.

We enjoyed making our own paper dolls and taking them on lots of fantastical adventures. They had lots of delightful encounters with all sorts of things like dinosaurs, jungle animals and farm animals just like in the story!

Counting down to Christmas ...
It's December and the build up to Christmas is underway! We got very excited when we noticed that Nursery had got out a special calendar. The calendar counts the days to Christmas, inside each pocket there is a chocolate coin ...

What is advent?
Advent means 'coming' and it's the period before Christmas which celebrates the birth of Jesus

Perky little penguins ...
This is the new core story that we will be sharing over the next two weeks. Perky little penguins, coming out to play, looking for their playmates, hurray!
We enjoyed listening to this story in Phonics, we watched them slide, jump and waddle around! We have enjoyed drawing our own pictures of penguins and learning a new penguin dance. We also enjoyed looking at non - fiction books to find out more information about them.

We also enjoyed playing out in the snow, we waddled, slid and jumped around just like a real penguin!
