Chinese New Year ...

his week we will be celebrating the Chinese New Year through lots of fun activities ...

What is Chinese New Year?

Chinese people throughout the world celebrate the New Year for 15 days in January or February. Each New Year is named after one of 12 animals. This year is the year of the Monkey. Families gather together and homes are spring cleaned and decorated, scrolls are put outside to frighten 'bad spirits' and bring prosperity to the household. Special food is prepared and everyone wears their smartest clothes and children are given lucky red and gold envelopes containing money. Celebrations also take place in the street. Crowds gather to watch magnificant lions and dragon dances and watch fireworks

Shrove Tuesday ...

We enjoyed helping to make pancakes ...

Pancake Day has been celebrated by Britons for centuries. Known also as Shrove Tuesday, its exact date, rather confusingly, changes every year, because it is determined by when Easter falls. But it is always the day preceding Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent), and always falls in February or March.

Why do we celebrate Pancake Day?
Traditionally, pancakes were eaten on this day to use up rich, indulgent foods like eggs and milk

before the 40-day fasting season of Lent began. But although it is enshrined in Christian tradition, it is believed that Pancake Day might originate in a pagan holiday, when eating warm, round pancakes - symbolising the sun - was a way of celebrating the arrival of spring!
